Batman hates pirates! PDF Print E-mail

Hey everyone, Steve here.

I found this article and thought "Wow, that's pretty darn neat!"

For those of you who don't want to read it, or cant...  A person went to the Eidos forums and complained that there was a huge problem in the code for the PC version of Batman: Arkham Asylum (which wont be released until next week).  Apparently the problem comese in when you try to make Batman glide.  For everyone else he'll open his wings and glide gently downwards but, for pirates, he opens and closes his wings, then plumets to his doom.

Hacker dude is a smart one.  He goes to the official forums, for the company, the one that made the game and all that, and asks about this, pointing the finger at bad code.  A mod who works for the company comes on and says "Nope".  It IS a problem with the code, but that problem only pops up when a person is playing a copy that wasn't purchased.

Come on, guys (and gals).  I know we're gamers, and money is short, but with games like these, real gems, lets speak with our wallets, BUY THE GAME!  So, please, when it comes to great games, save a Bat and buy the damn game!

Steve out!

Labor Day News PDF Print E-mail

Joe here with the news from around the web on this Labor Day, 2009.

The box office wasn't very strong this weekend, but Labor Day traditionally isn't a huge weekend for movies (people seem to want to "go outside" and "BBQ" and "watch college football" and other crazy things).  This year, Final Destination held onto the number one position with a $15.4 million take.  Inglorious Basterds remained in second with $15.0 million.  All  About Steve (which is not, contrary to popular reports, about our Steve) opened at third place with around $14 million in earnings.  A little of the ultra-violence only got Gamer to fourth place on its opening weekend, with about $11 million; District 9 fell from fourth to fifth, taking in an additional $9 million.

Not a ton of other film news going on, but there is this: Rambo 5 has been given the full go-ahead, and it will apparently take the series toward science fiction.  Also, Steven Soderberg is set to direct a new spy action film, which is going to star mixed-martial artist Gina Carano. That name meant nothing to me, but maybe it will mean something to you.

Much more game news, thanks to PAX this weekend (Penny Arcade's Expo).  IGN has a look at space-faring MMO Jumpgate, as well as an article on the hellish artistry at work in Dante's Inferno, a game I have high hopes will rock (its from the guys who brought you Dead Space - think God of War in the Hell described in the Infero).  They also spent some hands-on time with Mass Effect 2.  You know, that little game by some Canadian company...

Eurogamer has a series of pretty interesting articles/interviews about Valve's Left 4 Dead 2, the game with two numbers in its title.  Find them here, and here, and, oh, here.

Finally, GameTrailers has some HD footage of Uncharted 2 from PAX that is worth having a look-see.

Joe here with the latest from the weekend...

This is the big news of the day around the entertainment industry.  Disney is acquiring Marvel for around $4 billion.  Find lots more information on what this may mean (Pixar doing Marvel movies?  Wolverine learning the value of Christmas from Mickey Mouse?) here and here.

The Final Destination took first place with $28.3 million this weekend, despite abysmal reviews (it didn't screen for critics on Thursday, so they had to go to the regular theaters with the rest of us peons).  We'll see how it fairs after a week of word-of-mouth.  Inglorious Basterds fell to second play with a $20.0 million take.  Halloween II, the sequel to a remake no one wanted (well, someone must have wanted) opened at third with $17.4 million.  District 9 fell from second to fourth, earning an additional $10.7 million, while GI Joe took fifth place with $8 million in earnings.

In other film news, The Hobbit will probably not be shot in 3D according to director Guillermo Del Toro, though he was "blown away" by Avatar.

Rambo 5 has been greenlit to bring more ultra-violence and geriatric, crazily muscled actors kicking ass and taking names.

Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?  Bad Boys 3 in development (yes, with Bay directing).

In game news, here's something to get upset about: Blizzard's Paul Sams makes the not-so-subtle comment that Battle.net may gain a "charging mechanism at some point."  That is to say, it may be a safe bet that Blizzard plans to throttle its golden goose a little more.  And further screw over its fans.

In far cooler news, Sony is going to be releasing PS3-enhanced versions of God of War I and II on Blu-Ray this fall - they'll run at 720p and 60 fps with anti-aliasing.  This is awesome.

Joe here with the latest from the weekend...

Tarantino dominated the box office this weekend.  His World War II fantasy-thing Inglorious Basterds brought in $37.6 million.  District 9 fell to second but still took in another $18.9 million (total of $73.5 million so far, which isn't bad for a flick that cost $30 million to make).  GI Joe was third with $12.5 million (though it's doing gangbusters overseas, amazingly enough); The Time Traveler's Wife was fourth with $10 million; and Julie and Julia took in another $9 million at fifth place.

Christopher Nolan (you know, that one guy, who directed The Dark Knight?) has another secretive project coming next summer.  The teaser trailer came out today.

A Bioshock flick is still happening, but without Gore Verbinski (Pirates) at the helm.  Instead, we may see the director of 28 Weeks Later.  Verbinski is still producing.

More Avatar stuff, including the video game trailer (which is a prequel to the film, not an adaptation - for which we can all, I'm sure, be thankful).

This is one of those "hmm...could be cool...maybe" moments in the video game world.  Do we need to redo Rise of the Triad with modern graphics?  Can 3D Realms actually release a new game?  Both valid questions...

Mass Effect 2 will see a simultaneous release on the PC and 360.   When?  Q1 2010.  Same as every other damn game.

You may have already seen this one, but it's worth having a look.  Blizzard is promising a kinda of pseudo-LAN support for Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3, in direct reaction to the huge fan outcry over the studio's decision to remove LAN support.  It will still require an active Battle.net connection (and is a thinly veiled attempt to curb piracy).  Other Blizzcon news?  Trisha Helfer is voicing Kerigan, Diablo 3 will not be coming out in 2010, and the monk looks kick ass.
